Kwe! Congratulations, you have arrived in the community of Kitiganik.

Kitiganik (Rapid Lake)

Anicinape “Anishnabe-Anishinaabe”

Located on the shores of the Cabonga Reservoir, the community of Kitiganik is often referred to as Rapid Lake in honor of the lake of the same name. However, the lake disappeared with the creation of the reservoir in 1929. The use of this Anglophone name is explained by the fact that the most common second language of the people in the community is English. The abundance of forest and the proximity to several lakes make this community a destination of choice for fishing and outdoor enthusiasts.

Shayden Decoursay was born on August 29, 2004. She currently lives in Kitigan Zibi and spends her summers in Kitiganik. Her passions are field hockey, broomball, soccer and baseball. She is proud to be Anicinape (Anishnabe-Anishinaabe)ikwe; she loves to practice the traditional song and dance of her community. Don’t be afraid to hit the ice is her first film with Wapikoni.

According to Indigenous Tourisme Quebec, nearly 600 residents live in the Algonquin Anishnabe village of Lac-Rapide, located in the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. It is also the headquarters of the Algonquins of Barriere Lake.
