Baseball: history, rules and fun facts
Why take an interest in baseball ?
Baseball is one of the most popular sports across North America, Latin America, and Asia, attracting millions of fans to stadiums and television screens every year.
At first glance, baseball may seem complex. However, its basic principles are simple: hit the ball, run between the bases, and score points. This unique combination of strategy, precision, and teamwork makes it an exciting sport to both watch and play.
Unlike many sports where the action is continuous, baseball alternates between moments of anticipation and bursts of fast-paced action. Every pitch can change the outcome of a game, keeping fans engaged from start to finish.
👉 In this article, you’ll discover:
- The history of baseball
- Some surprising and fun facts
- And most importantly, a clear and simple overview of the rules to help you understand how this sport is played

The origins of baseball date back several centuries. Long before the creation of the modern sport, various bat-and-ball games were played throughout Europe, particularly in England.
In the early 19th century, these games evolved in North America. Different versions coexisted in various cities across the United States. Over time, common rules were established to standardize the sport.
For many years, a popular legend attributed the invention of baseball to Abner Doubleday in 1839. Today, historians generally agree that the sport developed gradually from several older games.
During the 1840s and 1850s, the first organized clubs emerged. The New York Knickerbockers played an important role in standardizing the rules that would become the foundation of modern baseball.
The sport’s popularity grew rapidly. After the American Civil War, baseball spread throughout the country. Competitions attracted larger crowds, and the first professional teams began to appear.
In 1876, the creation of the National League marked a major milestone in the history of professional baseball. Other leagues followed and helped structure the sport on a larger scale.
During the 20th century, baseball experienced significant international growth. Countries such as Japan, South Korea, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico developed strong baseball traditions.
Today, baseball is played on several continents. It is regularly ranked among the most popular sports in the world and continues to attract new generations of players and fans.

4 fun facts about baseball

Games Have No Time Limit
Unlike soccer, basketball, or hockey, a baseball game is not played against a clock. A game ends only when the required number of innings has been completed. As a result, some games can last much longer than expected.

Baseball Players Once Played Without Gloves
In the early days of baseball, players caught the ball with their bare hands. The first gloves appeared in the late 19th century and were much smaller than the ones used today.

Baseball Bats Have Evolved Significantly
The first baseball bats were often custom-made by the players themselves. Today, their design and manufacturing must meet strict standards to ensure both safety and fairness in competition.

Some Baseball Stadiums Can Hold Tens of Thousands of Fans
Some baseball stadiums rank among the largest sports venues in the world. For example, the famous Dodger Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers, can accommodate more than 56,000 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Major League Baseball (MLB) in terms of seating capacity.

BASEBALL PRACTICE

OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME AND COMPETITIONS
The objective of baseball is simple: score more points than the opposing team.
One team plays offense while the other plays defense. The offensive player, known as the batter, attempts to hit the ball thrown by the opposing pitcher. After making contact with the ball, the batter runs toward the bases in an effort to complete a circuit and score a point, known as a run.
Meanwhile, the defensive team tries to retrieve the ball and eliminate runners or batters before they can advance.
On the international stage, several major competitions attract baseball fans from around the world. The Baseball World Cup, continental championships, and the Olympic Games have all contributed to the sport’s global popularity.
At the professional level, the most well-known league is Major League Baseball (MLB), which includes teams from the United States and Canada. Japan is also home to one of the most prestigious professional baseball leagues in the world.
MAIN RULES
A baseball game is typically played over nine innings.
Each inning is divided into two halves. One team plays offense while the other plays defense, and then the roles switch.
The defensive team must record three outs to end the opposing team’s half-inning.
Points are scored when a player successfully runs around all four bases and returns to home plate.
The pitcher attempts to throw the ball through a specific area known as the strike zone.
A missed swing or a pitch thrown through the strike zone that is not hit counts as a strike. After three strikes, the batter is out.
On the other hand, if the pitcher throws four balls outside the strike zone, the batter is automatically awarded first base.
Some of the most common ways to get a player out include:
- Catching the ball before it touches the ground
- Reaching a base before the runner arrives
- Striking out a batter with three strikes
- Tagging a runner with the ball while they are off a base.
FIELD AND EQUIPMENT
A baseball field is known for its distinctive diamond shape.
At the four corners of the diamond are the bases:
- First base
- Second base
- Third base
- Home plate (the starting and finishing point for runners)
The pitcher stands in the center of the infield on a small raised area called the pitcher’s mound.
Basic baseball equipment includes:
- A baseball bat made of wood or composite materials
- A leather-covered baseball
- A glove used to catch the ball
- A protective helmet worn by batters
Catchers wear additional protective gear, including a mask, a chest protector, and shin guards.
Thanks to its relatively simple equipment and rules that can be learned gradually, baseball remains accessible to players of all ages.
