For most of the 20th century, San José was primarily an agricultural city.

Today, “CHEPE”, as the Ticos call it, is the most cosmopolitan capital in Central America. San Jose is home to more than a third of the Costa Rican population. The population of the municipality of San Jose is estimated at 350,000. The metropolitan area of San Jose has a population of 1,975,000. Founded in 1737, San José offers many architectural treasures, museums and an intense “Latin” life that is a must-see.
