Gesgapegiag

Mi'gmaq

Gesgapegiag is a Mi’gmaq community located on the shores of the Baie des Chaleurs. Its name, meaning “wide river” in Mi’gmaq, is also the original name given to the Cascapedia River, which borders the community. The Mi’gmaq of Gesgapegiag speak mostly English. The Gesgapegiag church, whose architecture is reminiscent of a wigwam structure, is named after Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native woman in North America to be canonized.
