Ball Hockey: history, rules and fun facts

Why Is Ball Hockey Worth Trying ?

Ball hockey is hockey without the ice. No skates, no rink—just a stick, a ball, and a little space. You can play it in a driveway, a gymnasium, a parking lot, or in an organized league.
It’s a fast-paced sport that’s easy to learn and accessible to everyone. Whether you know how to skate or not, whether you’re 8 or 60 years old, ball hockey is played in running shoes and is all about having fun.

The Origins of Ball Hockey
Ball hockey originated in Canada during the 19th century. Inspired by ice hockey, children and teenagers played in streets and alleys using a stick and a tennis ball—a simple way to enjoy their favorite sport without needing an ice rink.
In 1969, the invention of a hollow plastic ball that barely bounced marked a major turning point. Ball hockey became a sport in its own right, with its own rules and the creation of its first organized leagues. The first Canadian championships followed a few years later, along with women’s competitions.
You may also hear the term Cosom hockey. The name comes from Cosom, a company that manufactured hockey equipment in the 1960s. Today, ball hockey is the most common term used in Canada to describe this fast-paced and accessible sport, enjoyed by players of all ages.

OBJECTIVE AND COMPETITIONS
The objective of ball hockey is to score more goals than the opposing team by shooting the ball into the net with a stick.
Two teams compete against each other, usually in 4-on-4 or 6-on-6 formats, depending on the league and level of play. Each goal is worth one point, and the team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.
Ball hockey is played across Canada in both recreational and competitive leagues. The sport also features national championships and World Championships, bringing together some of the best teams from around the world.
MAIN RULES
Ball hockey is played without skates and without body contact. Players are not allowed to push, hit, or block an opponent with their body, making the game safer for everyone.
Players use a stick to control, pass, and shoot the ball. For safety reasons, the stick should generally not be raised above the waist or shoulders, depending on the league’s rules.
A game is divided into several periods, usually 15 to 20 minutes long. As in many sports, penalties may be given when a player breaks the rules.
COURT AND EQUIPMENT
Ball hockey can be played in a gymnasium, on an asphalt surface, or on a specially designed outdoor court.
The equipment is simple and affordable. Each player needs:
- A ball hockey stick, usually made of plastic or composite materials.
- A ball designed specifically for ball hockey.
- A pair of running shoes with good traction.
Players are also encouraged to wear gloves, shin guards, and protective eyewear for added safety. Goalies wear additional protective equipment, including leg pads, gloves, and a helmet.
