Waachiyaa! Congratulations, you have arrived in the community of Kawawachikamach.
Kawawachikamach is the only Naskapi community in Quebec. Its name means a winding river that turns into a large lake. Iyuw-iyimuun, a variant of Innu-aimun, is the language of use and English is fairly widespread as a second language. The Naskapi share many other similarities with the Innu. As a nomadic people, the Naskapi followed the caribou in their migration to ensure their subsistence. This is why the caribou has a very important place in Naskapi culture and crafts. Still today, the Naskapi put forward their very traditional way of life and their know-how through hunting and fishing.
According to Indigenous Tourism Quebec, this Naskapi community is in the North Shore administrative region, on the border with Newfoundland and Labrador. They have a very traditional way of life, such as subsistence hunting and fishing and trapping.
