Listuguj

Mi'gmaq

The word “Listuguj”, often spelled “Restigouche” in English and “Ristigouche” in French, is the origin of several regional place names including the Ristigouche River. The community of Listuguj is located on the shores of the Baie des Chaleurs. Fishing is therefore very important in the history and economy of the Mi’gmaq because of its proximity to the water.

According to Indigenous Tourism Quebec, Listuguj, a Mi’gmaq community, is named after one of the traditional forms of writing in their language that is still used in the Gaspé. Their main natural resource is salmon, which is considered a sacred animal and a traditional food. The main language is Mi’gmaq.
